First Steps with AWeber

If this is your first time using AWeber, you’ll be prompted for some basic information to set up your account and start creating your first mailing list. Here’s a video direct from AWeber that walks you through the process.

Why Does AWeber Need My Physical Address?

As you go through each step, you’ll come to a point where you have to enter your address. Your physical address will appear at the bottom of each email you send. The reason for this is to adhere to the CAN-SPAM Act.

The CAN-SPAM Act essentially says that every email message must have both:

  1. An unsubscribe link (or a way to opt-out of the email) and
  2. The sender’s valid physical postal address

Even if you’re not based in the U.S., AWeber is. As a U.S. email marketing company, AWeber is required to abide by this rule and in doing so, makes it a requirement for their users as well.

Finishing the Setup Process

Beyond the need for your physical address, there are a couple of other steps after the AWeber login process that can cause confusion for first-timers. Another one is to “Describe the emails your subscribers are going to see”

AWeber Login Screen

Your subscribers will see this if they ever unsubscribe from your list. It’s helpful if your subscribers don’t remember signing up, and you want to remind them what the list is about before they leave. You only have 400 characters though, so make it count!

Can I Edit AWeber’s Unsubscribe Page?

Unfortunately, AWeber doesn’t allow you much freedom to customize your unsubscribe page with anything other than this description and some basic branding. If you want more freedom to customize your unsubscribe page (or even host it on your own server), you’ll want to check out GetResponse instead.

Next Steps After AWeber Login

You’re logged in, now what? That depends on what you want to do. You can create follow-up messages (also known as autoresponders), start building landing pages, and many other email marketing tasks.
